Learn about controlling Mosquitoes, one of the most annoying insects we encounter throughout Oklahoma.
Mosquitoes are parasitic pests that look somewhat similar to flies. Female mosquitoes will feed on the blood of animals and people. They have slender bodies, long legs, narrow wings and an extended mouth-part (proboscis) that is used for deeding. Most mosquitoes are black or dark brown in color.
One can easily kill a mosquito with their bare hands, but if they get the opportunity to bite you there is a reason for concern. Mosquitoes feed on a wide range of hosts and are vectors of many diseases and parasites. Mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting the West Nile virus, Malaria and Zika in the United States. They are also responsible for infecting dogs with potentially fatal heart worms. Despite their small size, mosquitoes are some of the most dangerous animals in the world simplt due to the deadly disease they spread.
Mosquitoes are drawn to properties that provide an environment where they can thrive. Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in areas of standing water, so properties with ponds, swamps, drainage ditches and any other location where stagnant water is present is quite attractive to them. Females feed on blood in order to get the protein needed to make eggs. Both male and female mosquitoes will also consume plant nectar and pollen as their main food source so properties with dense flowering vegetation will attract biting mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. It’s very unlikely that you will see them during the heat of the day. Mosquitoes typically rest in tall grasses and areas of dense vegetation, along fence & tree lines, or underneath decks or porches. You may also find swarms of mosquitoes may be found around areas of standing water on your property. Mosquitoes live and breed outside, but they can make their way inside homes while searching for a meal. They get inside through gaps found around windows and doors, through open windows & doors or through holes in screens, this is common to occur in the evening when lights or electronics (tv, computer screen, phones, etc.) are turned on as they are attracted to light.
If heading into the wilderness or even tall grass, be sure to bring an insect repellent that repels mosquitoes in addition to ticks and others.
